Borderlands 4 Comparison – How Xbox Series X and Series S Stack Up

Borderlands 4 Xbox Series X vs Series S Comparison Reveals Key Differences

Borderlands 4 has officially landed onto Xbox and with some early testing via our Xbox Nation YouTube Channel, we’ve already got a first look at how the game performs across Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. The new comparison footage highlights resolution, frame rates, and visual quality on both the Xbox Series consoles.

Borderlands 4 - Xbox Series X & S Comparision

Borderlands 4 on Xbox Series X

On Microsoft’s flagship console, Borderlands 4 appears to run at 1728p resolution in both Quality and Performance modes. Visually, it looks clean and sharp, though not a major leap compared to past entries as you can see in our Borderlands 4 Comparison.

  • Quality Mode – Targeting 30FPS, and holds steady for the most part

  • Performance Mode – Targeting 60FPS, with only a brief frame drop observed in testing

Overall, it’s shaping up as a smooth experience for Series X players, with both modes offering consistent performance.

Borderlands 4 on Xbox Series S

The more affordable Series S delivers a different experience. According to the footage, resolution lands at 1080p, and textures appear noticeably softer compared to Series X.

  • Resolution – Estimated at 1080p

  • Frame Rate – Locked at 30FPS only

  • Visuals – Reduced texture quality, softer overall presentation

The lack of a 60FPS option is the big drawback here, though it’s worth noting that performance looks solid at its capped frame rate.

A Few Caveats

As with any pre-release testing, there are some important disclaimers:

  • These benchmarks are based on the pre-launch build of the game. A day-one patch could improve resolution, frame rates, or even add new options.

  • Resolution figures are estimates, not a full Digital Foundry-style breakdown.

  • No local multiplayer testing has been done yet, so performance in split-screen remains unknown.

Early Verdict

While it’s too soon to make a definitive judgment, this early comparison gives us a decent idea of what to expect from Borderlands 4 on Xbox. Series X players can choose between sharper visuals or smoother gameplay, while Series S players will get a stable but capped 30FPS experience.

I will be delving deeper into Borderlands 4 over the next week and I will return with a full review & even deeper analysis of the game on both the Xbox Consoles!
